The first time lines were handed to me I was completely enchanted. The connection grabbed my soul. It was the wheeler lines of an 8-up team of Percherons driven by master teamster Oliver Milhous. I was just a little horse-crazy kid who chased every horseperson I could find with a brush in one hand and a muck fork in the other, begging to help, to learn, to be a part of their world.
That was back in 1990, and the feeling of lines in my hands today is no less enchanting than it was then. I love everything to do with horses and have delved into every discipline possible, but the power, the connection, the joy I feel when I drive is off the charts. About ten years ago I started competing with and training driving horses, mules and donkeys, even a few oxen. Nothing close to the "master teamster" level of Oliver and so many other great drivers, but I did find success and unbelievable happiness. I drove professionally for different carriage companies in 4 states, learning different styles and methods and driving many different breeds and disciplines. I've had many adventures, thrilling successes, "puckering" close calls, been in the championships and gone home with nothing but an empty wallet. So many memories to cherish, I wonder if my grandkids will believe some of my stories!
At the end of 2021 I'd decided I wanted to get a "real job" and quit training. But how to stay connected to the driving world? How to keep my friends and clients connected! WE NEED A DRIVING CLUB!
So I presented the idea to Becky, Julie and Jerusha (my driving besties) and Cal-Neva was born. We wanted a club that's all-inclusive, to be open to riders, drivers and just about anyone who's eyes light up when they see a horse in hitch. We wanted to be open to both sides of the Sierra and to offer all kinds of events that are educational, fun and safe. We wanted to avoid a "snooty" feel that we felt from some clubs, but still remain professional. We built a 501c7 and obtained horse-drawn vehicle event- specific insurance.
Now into our second year as a club we can hardly believe the wonders that continue to develop for us all. The memories, the friendships, the fun is far beyond what we dreamed! Join us and become part of the family.
Happy Trails!!
